What does "base" mean?
The base is how many distinct digits you have before you carry. In base 10 we use 0–9. In base 2 we have 0 and 1. In base 16 we have 0–9 and A–F. The position of a digit always means "times the base to that power", just like our familiar tens and hundreds.
