Tricks for fast estimates
- Round to friendly numbers. 47 × 19 ≈ 50 × 20 = 1000.
- Use benchmarks. Compare to something you know (a handful, a step).
- Check the magnitude. Is the answer in the tens, hundreds, or thousands?
Why estimate?
To catch wrong answers. If your calculator says 47 × 19 = 14, you know instantly something's off — the estimate is 1000.
