Transcendental numbers

Numbers that aren't roots of any nice polynomial — like π and e.

A transcendental number isn't a root of any polynomial with integer coefficients. They're 'beyond' algebra.

Famous transcendentals

  • π = 3.14159…
  • e = 2.71828…
  • eᵖⁱ ≈ 23.14…

Almost every real number is transcendental — but proving a specific number is, is hard.
