Memorising times tables

The 12×12 grid has 144 facts, but you don't have to learn them all separately. Many are duplicates (3×4 and 4×3 give the same answer), and the 1× and 10× tables are basically free.

Order to learn them

Most kids start with 2, 5, and 10 (easy patterns), then 3, 4, and 9 (also patterned), then 6, 7, 8 last (the hardest ones). The 11× and 12× tables come after.

Spot the patterns

  • — every answer is even.
  • — last digit is always 0 or 5.
  • — the digits of every answer add up to 9 (9, 18, 27, 36…).
  • 10× — just stick a zero on the end.
