Multiplication Around You

Spot multiplication in tiles, eggs, fingers — count rows × columns.

Multiplication is hiding everywhere. Whenever something comes in equal rows or groups, you've got a × waiting to happen.

Try this
6
seats in a hall that's 8 seats wide = 48
Your turn

An egg carton holds 2 rows of 6. A tray holds 8 such cartons. How many eggs?

Repeated addition is the same thing: 4 + 4 + 4 is just 3 × 4. Spotting equal groups is half the skill.

Recap
  • Equal rows or groups → multiplication.
  • Count one row, count one column, multiply — that's a whole array.
  • Multiplication is repeated addition, shrunk into one step.
  • Once you see groups, you see × everywhere: cartons, tiles, wheels, weeks.

Spot it in the wild

  • Egg cartons — 2 rows × 6 = 12
  • Tile floors — count one row, count one column, multiply
  • Fingers — 2 hands × 5 = 10
  • Car wheels in a parking lot — cars × 4
  • Days in three weeks — 3 × 7 = 21

Repeated addition is the same thing. 4 + 4 + 4 is 3 × 4. Spotting equal groups is half the skill.
