Area conversions

Square metres, hectares, acres — the math of land.

Area conversions are easy to get wrong because area uses the *square* of the length factor. 1 m = 100 cm, but 1 m² = 10,000 cm².

Type a value, pick units
0.4047

1 acre = 0.4047 hectare

Common area units

  • 1 m² = 10,000 cm² · 1 km² = 1,000,000 m² = 100 hectares.
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (100 m × 100 m square).
  • 1 acre ≈ 4,047 m² ≈ 0.405 hectares · 1 mi² = 640 acres.
Your turn

A farm is 50 hectares. Roughly how many acres is that?

Always square the length factor: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² ≈ 0.0929 m² — not 0.3048 m².

Common area units

  • 1 m² = 10,000 cm²
  • 1 km² = 1,000,000 m² = 100 hectares
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (a square 100 m × 100 m)
  • 1 acre ≈ 4,047 m² ≈ 0.405 hectares
